A team from BambooLogic attended the first Ibero Bamboo Symposium in Madrid and Under the Bamboo Tree 2019 near Parma, where Dr. Hans Friederich, Senior Advisor at BambooLogic and former Director-General of INBAR, talked about bamboo in Europe.
The Ibero Bamboo Symposium, co-organised by the Spanish BAMBUSA Foundation and the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) was the first international meeting about bamboo in southern Europe. The BambooLogic team used the opportunity to meet a number of potential partners and share our plans for the Portugal and Spain plantations.
Under the Bamboo Tree 2019, a creative cultural event co-organised by Labirinto della Masone, was geared towards sustainable development. Dr. Hans Friederich gave a presentation about the contribution of bamboo for several of the SDGs. He highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals where bamboo could make a significant difference on poverty reduction, renewable energy, construction and urban development, sustainable production and consumption, climate change and terrestrial ecosystem management.
The presentation ended with a reflection of the opportunities that bamboo provides for green development in Europe, including the Bamboologic proposition of planting bamboo in southern Europe for rural employment, land and water management and industrial development. Like in Madrid, the response was very positive, and I was told by the President of the Italian Bamboo Society that there are already nearly two thousand hectares of bamboo in Italy.
Dr. Hans Friederich: “After these two events, I am convinced that there is scope to plant bamboo is several South-European countries, and I am looking forward to make this idea a reality during the coming years.”
