History project Drawdown
Project Drawdown was founded in 2014 by environmentalist Paul Hawken to measure and model the most substantive solutions to stop global warming, and to communicate those findings to the world. Stopping global warming is possible, with solutions that exist today. In order to do this, we must work together to achieve Drawdown, the point when greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere start to decline. Project Drawdown is helping the world stop global warming by achieving Drawdown — as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible. All solutions which make impact are listed in the project.
Bamboo solution for land use
Bamboo rapidly sequesters carbon in biomass and soil, taking it out of the air faster than almost any other plant, and can thrive on inhospitable degraded lands—the ideal place to put bamboo to work. According to the Drawdown Group bamboo is one of the top solutions to address global warming. If we want to reach the Climate goals in 2040 the urgency to use bamboo on degraded land is even higher.
Just a grass, bamboo has the compressive strength of concrete and the tensile strength of steel. It reaches its full height in one growing season, at which time it can be harvested for pulp or allowed to grow to maturity over four to eight years. After being cut, bamboo re-sprouts and grows again.
Impact and profit
According to the Drawdown group; Bamboo is planted on 31,1 million hectares today. The drawdown group assumes that it will be grown on an additional 14,9 million hectares of degraded or abandoned lands. Our carbon sequestration calculations include both living biomass and long-lived bamboo products, with an annual rate of 2.9 tons of carbon per acre.
Where drawdown solution #35 bamboo is substituted for aluminum, concrete, plastic, or steel, there can be avoided emissions as well, which are not included in the total of 7.2 gigatons of carbon dioxide sequestered by 2050. An initial investment of $24 billion could yield financial return of $265 billion in the upcoming 30 years. We believe the advantage of growing bamboo in Europe is that we help the climate by avoiding long shipments over sea and we create jobs in rural areas in Europe that are desperately needed. Besides that, since the first and main market will be Europe, transport costs and import taxes are minimized, quality controls are simplified and currency fluctuations have no effect on the margin.
