Bamboo can compensate for about 600 tonnes of CO2 per hectare over a period of 30 years. This comes down to an average of 20 tonnes per year. Due to its fast growth and long lifespan, it is one of the best-performing crops when it comes to CO2 absorption.
But this is just the beginning! As soon as the bamboo industry has been established, the triple effect will become clear! 1 hectare of managed bamboo plantation and subsequent production can reduce up to 1000 tonnes of CO₂.
The total CO2 advantage
Studies carried out by INBAR have shown that 1 hectare of managed bamboo plantation results in the following CO2 reductions.
Effect 1 - CO2 absorption
A direct CO₂ reduction and carbon storage during growth of 600 tonnes over the course of 30 years.
Effect 2 - Carbon storage in sustainable products
The carbon stored in sustainable products over the course of 30 years leads to a CO₂ reduction of 250 tonnes.
Effect 3 - Prevented carbon emissions
The CO₂ emissions prevented by the use of bamboo as a sustainable alternative will lead to a CO2 reduction of 350 tonnes over the course of 30 years.
