Until a few months ago, Dr. Hans Friederich was the CEO of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR), based in Beijing, China. INBAR is the only international, inter-governmental organisation that promotes bamboo and rattan for sustainable development. During his five-year tenure, INBAR’s membership increased to 45 governments and became a “Permanent Observer” of the United Nations. The organisation is mainly helping the bamboo industry develop in its member continents: Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, Hans now wants to support European countries take advantage of these natural resources as well.
Dr. Hans Friederich is also Ambassador of the World Bamboo Organisation, a global network of bamboo specialists. As ambassador, he promotes the use of bamboo and bamboo products for the sake of the environment and economy.
Prior to joining INBAR, Dr. Friederich worked as Director Europe for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), based in Switzerland. In this context, he advocated the opportunities that nature provides to help overcome some of the critical socio-economic development challenges that Europe is facing.
Dr. Friederich is convinced that growing bamboo in southern Europe is a smart and lucrative investment. An innovative example of Argo-forestry that has not only a positive impact on economic development but also on soil quality, water management and mitigation of climate change by creating effective natural carbon sinks. He is keen on helping BambooLogic establish the first plantation in the southern regions of Portugal and Spain and expand the successful developments to other regions in Southern Europe.
