Why an EPD?
An EPD is a standardized document that describes the environmental impact of a product, from production to delivery. For this EPD, the focus is on raw material supply of a bamboo pole, transportation, and production.
The EPD has been entered in the Nationale Milieu Database (NMD) in the Netherlands in july 2024. This is an important first step in providing standardized information on European bamboo for architects, engineers and other stakeholders.
The carbon storage capacity and low footprint of bamboo is impressive making it a potential CO2-negative material.
Key insights
- Environmentally friendly: Bamboo poles have a negative CO₂ emission due to their biogenic carbon storage.
- Low impact: Their environmental impact is minimal compared to traditional building materials.
- Local production: Bamboo farms in Europe reduce transportation emissions and contribute to sustainable local production.
A sustainable production process
The Vidigueira bamboo farm uses sustainable methods:
- Field management: Solar powered, irrigation mainly on rainwater, no crop protection agents applied, favourable environment for other fauna & flora
- Soil restoration: Bamboo waste is returned to the soil
- Quality control: After harvesting, bamboo poles are processed and selected for quality.
Why Choose European bamboo?
BambooLogic’s European bamboo poles are versatile and can be used for a variety of applications. With their high carbon storage capacity and low environmental impact, they offer a sustainable alternative to traditional materials such as steel, hardwood and concrete.
1 m³ of bamboo stores an impressive 1,065 kg of CO₂ during its lifecycle. This highlights bamboo’s potential in mitigating climate change.
